A Brightline train hit and killed a woman who was on the tracks in Boynton Beach on Friday night, police said.

The train was offering a VIP ride from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach the night before it was set to begin running introductory service.

The train was running smoothly when it made an abrupt stop, a passenger said. No one on the train was injured.

A Brightline employee informed the passengers that there had been a “trespasser incident” during their two-hour wait on the tracks.

Passengers were transferred to buses and taken to West Palm Beach. From there they were bused back to Fort Lauderdale.

After the woman was hit police were called to 600 North Florida East Coast Railway at 6:25 p.m., said Jaclyn Smith, a spokeswoman for Boynton Beach police.

“It is unclear at this time what she was doing on the tracks,” Smith said.

A death investigation is underway.

This is the third time that a Brightline train has killed someone.

Another woman died in July after she was hit in Boca Raton. Her death was investigated as a suicide.

In November, a second woman was on the tracks in Deerfield Beach when she was struck.
